COURSE OVERVIEW

One day course includes delivery of theory and simulated practice learning to replicate situations in tracheostomy care that you are likely to encounter in clinical practice with an aim to improve care, enhance patient safety and optimize outcomes in a safe controlled environment without the potential risk to live patients.

  • Overview of the respiratory system
  • Types & characteristics of tracheostomy, neonatal/paediatric, Shiley, Bivona, cuffed/uncuffed, fenestrated/unfenestrated, tracoe twist tubes
  • Indications for tracheostomy for adult & child
  • Identify training competency, and rationale for changing tracheostomy tapes/ties, stoma and skin care, changing paediatric tracheostomy tubes/inner tubes.
  • Identify indications for suction, recognition of unwell child, suction risks
  • Emergency tracheostomy management including signs of respiratory distress, airway assessment, understand rationale for contents of emergency tracheostomy box, basic life support
  • Understand requirement for humidification & nebulisation
  • Indications for ventilation, invasive/non-invasive
  • Understand different modes of ventilation, equipment & trouble shooting ventilator alarms.
  • Understand your role and management of child/adult on a ventilator. Simulated practice of clients on wet and dry ventilator circuits.
  • Simulated Practice stations with demonstrations and attendee practice

Please contact us for further information regarding simulation provision. Simulated practice builds on the theory learnt and allows healthcare staff to rehearse behaviours in the classroom in a safe environment.


 

DESIGNED FOR

For healthcare staff, community carers, clinical support workers, healthcare assistants and registered nurses with care experience but may have limited tracheostomy experience or staff with experience but who have not cared for a client with a tracheostomy for a period of time that require a full day refresher. All aspects of training include guidelines from the National Tracheostomy Safety Project.
